Seminole Public Works and Emergency Operationa Center - Contruction Begins

SEMINOLE – The first visible step in the construction of the Seminole’s new Public Works and Emergency Operations Center buildings has taken place on 70th Avenue.  A Public Works maintenance center and garage will be built on the former St. Petersburg Times site and a Public Works administration/emergency operations center on a site where the house and the former Seminole Fire Rescue headquarters were located. They will replace the current Public Works facility on Ridge Road in Seminole City Park.

City Manager Frank Edmunds said construction will start soon after a final cost is presented by Biltmore Construction of Clearwater.

  • Both buildings will be built to Category 5 hurricane standards
  • The targeted completion date is June 2010.
  • The estimated cost is $6 million but Edmunds said the city is optimistic the final figure will come in closer to $5.5 million.
  • The project is being funded by current and future Penny for Pinellas funds.

What to do with the current Public Works building?

Among the possibilities are refitting the building for use as a senior center or using it as a senior center with a portion dedicated for use by the Seminole Historical Society.  The city’s biggest difficulty will be coming up with funds to sustain operations in the facility.  Estimated $120,000 to $150,000 per year would be needed for staffing, utilities and building maintenance.

Eagle Lake Park set to open in April 2010

The county plans to open Eagle Lake Park in April 2010, four to five months later than originally planned.  The opening of the 163-acre park was delayed due to budget constraints and personnel reductions.  That might come as a disappointment to area residents, but personnel is needed to keep up other parks for the time being.

Residents are passionate about their parks, and, consequently, city and county officials face difficult choices in deciding what parks and recreation services they must reduce or raise fees to subsidize.

That said, Eagle Lake Park will be a fine addition to the county’s park system, with 2.5 miles of paved trails, 1,774 feet of boardwalks and much wildlife.

Seminole City Adopts New Parking Ordinances

Seminole city councilors adopted several ordinances pertaining to public streets and public property.

The first ordinance adopted prohibits overnight parking of recreational vehicles, vessels, watercraft, trailers, truck tractors or semi-trailers and certain cargo vehicles on public streets in single-family neighborhoods.

The several other ordinance prohibits people from living in recreational vehicles parked in residential districts.  It also sets a limit to two any combination of boats, trailers or recreational vehicles that can be parked in the front yard of a residential property between the public right of way and the front building line of the home.

The ordinances were approved for aesthetic and safety reasons. Allowing overnight parking of recreational vehicles and watercraft can be a hindrance to fire trucks and rescue vehicles. The presence of several of these types of vehicles on front yards is unappealing and could hurt property values.

Before acting on the proposed measures, city officials conducted a survey of their residents on the issues. Fifty-five percent of the residents participated in the survey and 70 percent favored the changes.
